Earlier this year, software support for the 2019 flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10+, concluded as they completed four years on the market. These phones were entitled to three major OS upgrades and four years of security updates, so technically, they shouldn’t receive any new updates. However, a surprising update has arrived.
The Galaxy S10e, S10, and S10+ have received an update on the Telcel network in Mexico. This update includes a more recent security patch, specifically the September 2023 patch, and it comes with firmware version ending in HWI1.
It’s still uncertain whether this update will be rolled out to other markets and carriers. It’s possible that this could be an exception limited to Galaxy S10 devices on Mexico’s Telcel network. The previous update for these devices was released in March, during the period they were still eligible for security updates. Therefore, this latest update might just be the carrier’s farewell gesture.
It’s essential to note that this doesn’t indicate that Samsung is extending support for security updates to match Google’s new policy, which promises at least seven years of updates for Pixel devices. Even if Samsung revises its policy, which is a possibility, it’s unlikely to include devices as old as the Galaxy S10.
In any case, owners of Galaxy S10e, S10, and S10+ in Mexico can attempt to download the update by going to their phone’s Settings » Software update menu. An alternative method is to visit our archives, download the latest firmware for your phone and region, and install it using a Windows PC and a USB cable.
