Meta is discontinuing support for WhatsApp on older Android operating system versions, resulting in the messaging app’s cessation on certain Galaxy phones later this month. However, this change should primarily concern collectors of classic Galaxy phones who are still using the company’s original models.
As of October 24, WhatsApp will no longer function on Android 5.0 and older versions of the Google mobile operating system. In essence, this alteration will impact any Android device still operating on version 5.0 Lollipop or an earlier version, not limited to Samsung phones.
This development may pose a challenge for users of Galaxy S4 and Note 3, assuming there are any such users left.
Devices such as the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4, having received the official Android 6 Marshmallow update, are exempt from the effects of this WhatsApp change, at least for the time being.
However, Samsung phones, including the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3, are not as fortunate. These devices received the Android Lollipop version years ago but did not receive version 5.1.1. The last official operating system they were equipped with was Android 5.0 Lollipop, which no longer meets the requirements for WhatsApp support.
It is reasonable to assume that there are not many remaining users of Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3, and perhaps those who are still utilizing this hardware have installed more recent custom ROMs, thus evading the impact of this WhatsApp policy modification. Nevertheless, if you are still using the Galaxy S4, Note 3, or an older Galaxy device, kudos to you for managing to keep these phones operational for a decade or longer.
Nonetheless, it might be time to consider an upgrade. The new Galaxy S23 series is likely to impress you with its performance, 120Hz smooth display, One UI features, build quality, and more. Even the Galaxy A54 is worth considering if you decide to retire your older device.
