Following the release of the Mate 60 series, Huawei resumed the production of 5G-capable HiSilicon Kirin chipsets for its smartphones. Now, it appears that the company is considering another significant change by developing its own image sensors.
Historically, Huawei has relied on Sony sensors for its phone cameras, known for their distinctive design with two yellow sub-pixels instead of two green ones. However, information from leaker Fixed Focus Digital suggests that Huawei and Sony have not extended their partnership, and Huawei no longer has Sony sensors in its inventory.
This development has sparked speculation that the upcoming Huawei P70 series will employ sensors designed in-house by Huawei. The company recently had to replace another component of its camera system when its partnership with Leica concluded, leading to the introduction of the XMAGE platform, featuring a bespoke NPU (Neural Processing Unit).
Additionally, reports indicate that Huawei is actively working on a new optical fingerprint reader for the P70 series. While Huawei has not officially confirmed these details, it is expected that these in-house design developments will play a significant role in the presentation of the P70 series, which is anticipated to be unveiled early next year.
Due to external factors, Huawei has been compelled to create its own alternatives for components it previously sourced externally. It appears that the P70 series will take this self-reliance to the next level.
