OnePlus, in collaboration with BOE, has announced its plans to unveil a groundbreaking display, likely designed for mobile devices, on October 24, 2023, at an event in Chongqing, China. This exciting revelation came earlier today when both brands shared the news on Weibo. In their event announcement post, OnePlus declared, “Sunrise·East! In 30 years, we have gone from lagging behind to catching up to surpassing. On October 24, OnePlus teams up with BOE to invite you to witness a historic moment for Chinese screens!”

As of now, neither OnePlus nor BOE has disclosed specific details about this upcoming display. However, a well-known source of tech information, Digital Chat Station, has shared insider information suggesting that this new screen will boast a “2K” resolution and an impressive brightness of 3,000 nits. The source also hints that BOE will soon introduce another display featuring 3,000 nits of brightness but with a “1.5K” resolution. According to Digital Chat Station, both displays will feature 2,160Hz PWM dimming and “single pulse DC.”

OnePlus Currently Holds the Title for the Brightest Display

Just yesterday, OnePlus introduced its inaugural foldable smartphone, the OnePlus Open. This innovative device features a foldable design similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 5. According to OnePlus, both the external and the inner (foldable) displays of the OnePlus Open can reach an impressive peak brightness of 2,800 nits, making it the talk of the tech world, as no other mobile display on the market currently offers such exceptional brightness. If Digital Chat Station’s leak holds true, OnePlus and BOE will set a new record with their upcoming display.

It’s worth noting that this display, a product of the OnePlus and BOE collaboration, is expected to be featured in the OnePlus 12, slated for release in the coming months. Leaks suggest that the Galaxy S24, a competitor in the smartphone market, will sport a display with a peak brightness of 2,400 nits. This implies that the display on the OnePlus 12 will surpass that of the Galaxy S24 in terms of brightness.

Author’s Note: While the specifications on paper indicate that the OnePlus Open’s displays have higher peak and maximum brightness compared to the screens on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, real-world tests, such as one conducted by GSMArena, have shown that the foldable display on the OnePlus Open isn’t as bright as that of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 in practice (1,238 nits vs. 1,216 nits). Therefore, even if OnePlus and BOE launch a display with a peak brightness of 3,000 nits on paper, there’s no guarantee that it will outperform the competition in real-life scenarios.
