A recent report suggests that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is set to follow in the footsteps of the iPhone 15 Pro by adopting a titanium build.
According to The Elec, the “frame case” of the Galaxy S24 Ultra will shift from the conventional aluminum construction to titanium when it launches next year. The titanium alloy is said to be processed by a Chinese company known as “Solomon.”
Samsung began exploring the use of titanium roughly two years ago but only recently made the decision to incorporate it into their smartphones. This decision is likely influenced by Apple’s strong emphasis on titanium as a key selling point for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max.
Despite the considerably higher cost, around 15 million titanium cases are reportedly in the works. Transitioning to titanium is expected to increase the frame cost of each unit by four to five times compared to the current cost of under $20. It’s worth noting that this change is currently only associated with the Galaxy S24 Ultra and not the standard S24 or S24+ models.
However, what’s even more intriguing is that Samsung may not limit the use of titanium to the Galaxy S24 Ultra alone.
The report suggests that while the Galaxy S24 Ultra will be the first Samsung device to feature a titanium build, the company may consider expanding its use to other Galaxy phones depending on the reception. Foldable phones could be a logical choice for such expansion, although the increased weight of titanium compared to aluminum might be a limiting factor. On the other hand, titanium’s greater strength could potentially offset the need for more material, making it a viable option for various form factors. Nevertheless, further details and decisions are yet to be revealed.
